Growing your content business

The University of Oregon School of Journalism and Communication has launched a new 10-week entrepreneurial journalism program for content creators, entrepreneurs and media executives.

Growing Your Content Business features a diverse line-up of 30 distinguished content industry innovators who have led teams at Google, Condé Nast, Marie Claire, The Economist, BBC, Advance Publications, Quartz, ThinkProgress and over a dozen successful media startups.

It will run from April 1 – June 3, 2022 as a series of weekly interactive Zoom discussions where participants will learn to develop, launch or diversify a content business.

Each week guest speakers will share their experiences around a key theme. Topics and essential strategies that will be explored include: diversifying revenue streams, nurturing online communities, tackling issues of underrepresentation, and building successful media products such as newsletters, podcasts and video series.

The program will be led by three seasoned media professionals who are well known to What’s New in Publishing and have hugely contributed to our title in the form of special reports and exclusive features:

Simon Owens

Simon edits a highly regarded industry newsletter that covers everything from the Creator Economy to traditional media. He also hosts The Business of Content, a podcast about how publishers create, distribute and monetize digital content.

Ed Madison

Ed Madison began his multifaceted media career as a high school intern at the Washington Post-owned CBS television affiliate in Washington, D.C., during the height of Watergate. Shortly after graduating from Emerson College, he was recruited by CNN as a founding producer/director. He is an associate professor at the University of Oregon School of Journalism and Communication.

Damian Radcliffe

Damian Radcliffe is the Carolyn S. Chambers Professor in Journalism and a Professor of Practice at the University of Oregon. Damian is also a three-time Knight News Innovation Fellow at the Tow Center for Digital Journalism at Columbia University.

It’s essential for anyone working in the media industry to be across the latest industry trends and what it means to them. This course is the perfect opportunity to discuss their implications with your peers and to leave with a better understanding of how to grow your digital business and its impact.
