In the first episode back after the summer break, the Media Voices team dive into some of the stories you may have missed while you were sunning yourself somewhere nice, or holding the fort for colleagues who were doing the same.

Join us as we recap the GateHouse/Gannett merger (as well as the proper pronunciation of ‘Gannett’), go round in circles with Facebook’s plans for a News tab, sort of celebrate some new print launches, and debate what ‘Knewz’ actually means. Plus, listen out for a special appearance from the new Media Voices cat.

Our 7 summer stories:

  1. GateHouse Media has acquired Gannett and will merge the two companies
  2. Facebook is hiring actual human editors for its News Tab, and is allegedly considering paying up to $3 million per publisher in licensing fees
  3. Google has clashed with publishers over its latest version of Incognito mode as a popular method of getting round metered paywalls
  4. Paddy Power has launched ‘Pitch Invader’, a free football-focused magazine. We’ve also found a podcast-focused magazine called Pod Bible, and The Spectator is launching a US monthly print magazine
  5. Verizon is selling Tumblr to WordPress owner for cheaps: $3 million compared to the $1.1 billion it was valued at in 2013
  6. The Times and Sunday Times have exceeded 300,000 paying digital subscribers. Plus, the New York Times now has 3.78 million digital subscribers, and the Los Angeles Times is way behind on its own digital subscriptions plans
  7. News Corp is working on a news distribution service called ‘Knewz’ in an effort to offer an alternative to Google and Facebook

Warning: this episode also features some questionable paywall innuendo.
