Q&A: WoodWing, combining multichannel publishing with digital asset management

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

WoodWing Software is a global market leader in the workflows and processes behind multichannel publishing and digital asset management. A long-established company that is well known to many in the digital publishing industry, WNIP caught up with Woodwing’s Rhys Wesley to find out more about the company’s most recent innovations…

Can you give us some background about your company?

WoodWing helps brands, publishers, and agencies create and manage content across teams, and publish content on different channels. We build solutions ideal for large teams to efficiently work together on creative processes, within systems that are easy to manage. We have our headquarters in the Netherlands, offices in the US and Malaysia, and over 80 partners in more than 100 countries

What business problem is your company addressing?

Humans have always been storytellers. But as new channels emerge, technology evolves, and consumer expectations grow, publishers (including brands that publish a lot of content) face challenges around content management, workflow, and distribution. We believe that these organizations should focus on creating great stories, and we enable them to do that with technology and services, so they can evolve and stay meaningful.

What is your core product addressing this problem?

Our core product offering is about the combination of content creation, workflow, and publishing, with Digital Asset Management. This integrated solution enables publishers to create content for print and digital in a highly structured and efficient manner, and at the same time repurpose content multiple times – across different brands and titles, at present or in the future, or even as new channels emerge.

Can you give some examples of publishers successfully using your solutions?

Our customers fall into two categories: publishers and brands. Our publishers include Hearst, Forbes, and Axel Springer, as well as many other magazines and newspapers around the world. Our brand customers tend to be larger companies that face similar content production challenges to publishers – regular deadlines, distributed teams, large volumes of assets, and so on. In this space, we are working with brands such as Coca Cola European Partners and Yamaha Motor Europe.

Pricing?

We customize pricing per customer, based on factors such as number of users, complexity of workflow, integrations, and so on.

What are other people doing in the space and why?

We have a few key points of differentiation:

  • The integration of publishing and workflow with Digital Asset Management.
  • An open architecture that connects to key systems like Adobe Creative Cloud.
  • The ability to publish to any channel – print, in-app, online, or Apple News+.

There are solutions that solve some of these challenges (and the DAM space in particular is pretty crowded). WoodWing solves them all together.

How do you view the future?

Storytelling is always evolving, and for almost two decades now we have supported publishers in telling their stories in new formats and channels. We were the first software provider to support magazine publishing on the iPad, we are the among the first to support publishing on Apple News+, and in the future we will support publishers’ ability to tell their stories in whatever new channels may emerge next.

Thank you.
