YouTube becomes the most popular social service, overtaking Facebook. Twitter leads in news.

Just last week we reported that YouTube is now responsible for 37% of all mobile internet traffic, with Facebook far behind at less than 9%.

Now YouTube has also overtaken Facebook to become the most popular social service globally, according to GlobalWebIndex’s latest 2019 Social Media User Trends Report.

While Facebook is hanging on to its lead by number of members, in actual usage YouTube has leapt well ahead, at 86% to Facebook’s 79%.

Facebook is still the dominant social platform in terms of membership, but falls behind YouTube in terms of weekly visitors,” according to the GlobalWebIndex report.

“If we narrow our focus to people who have visited or used the service in the last month, YouTube rises to top position,” the report states.

“It’s the only major social service to have more people visiting than those who are a member, revealing that significant numbers of its visitors are either not logged into their accounts, or are not even members in the first place.”

The global rankings from both SimilarWeb and Alexa confirm this change of guard. Comparing the data from both services side by side indicates that until quite recently, Facebook was leading in terms of popularity.

Given the significant jump in mobile time-spent of late, especially among 18-34 year-olds, and YouTube’s massive lead in mobile, this shift was only a matter of time.

Although when it comes to news consumption on social media, Twitter takes the lead—according to the Trends Report from GlobalWebIndex—with Facebook and YouTube at positions 2 and 3 respectively.
