“AI is the most profound technology we are working on today … We are just at the beginning of our AI journey, and the best is yet to come.”

OpenAI, which developed ChatGPT, recently announced the launch of the paid version of its viral Artificial Intelligence (AI) chatbot—ChatGPT Plus. Within hours, Google’s CEO Sundar Pichai confirmed that they too are on track to release generative AI applications very soon.

In the coming weeks and months we’ll make these language models available,” Sundar remarked during his company’s latest earnings call, “so that people can engage directly with them.”

“This will help us continue to get feedback, test and safely improve them. These models are particularly amazing for composing, constructing and summarizing. They will become even more useful for people as they provide up-to-date more factual information.”

We’ve been preparing for this moment since early last year, and you’re going to see a lot from us in the coming few months.

Google has been at the forefront of the AI revolution for several years now. Its machine learning algorithms and deep neural networks have been used to power various products and services, from search engines to virtual assistants.

“AI is the most profound technology we are working on today,” Sundar declared. “Our talented researchers, infrastructure and technology make us extremely well-positioned as AI reaches an inflection point.”

More than six years ago I first spoke about Google being an AI-first company. Since then we’ve been a leader in developing AI.

The company has been working on its own language models, such as BERT and Transformer-XL, that can compete with ChatGPT. These models are designed to offer improved accuracy and efficiency, and Google has been working on integrating them into various products and services.

Translating these kinds of technical leaps into products that help billions of people is what our company has always thrived on.

Google has also been working closely with OpenAI to share knowledge and expertise in the field. The two companies have been sharing data and research findings, and working together on projects that can advance the state of AI.

“In fact, our Transformers research project and our field-defining paper in 2017, as well as our path-breaking work in diffusion models are now the basis of many of the generative AI applications you’re starting to see today,” Sundar commented.

“Everyone working on the various projects underway is excited. We’ll pursue this work boldly, but with a deep sense of responsibility, with our AI principles and the highest standards of information integrity at the core of all our work.”

We are just at the beginning of our AI journey, and the best is yet to come.
